The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chennai and a red alert for surrounding districts including Chengalpattu. IMD has urged people to stay away from the sea, avoid non-essential travel and exercise caution.

Cyclone Ditvaha is now in the south-west of the Bay of Bengal, near the coast of Sri Lanka. In the last 6 hours it has moved towards north-northwest at a speed of about 7 km/h. As of 11:30 pm on November 28, its situation was something like this:
