Can Jorge Martín take Aprilia to new heights? Carlos Checa believes world champion can ‘contribute a lot’

After competing in the world championship until literally the last round of the year, Jorge Martín didn’t convince Ducati officials to bet on him for the factory team and that motivated the now world champion to come to Aprilia and the Spaniard could be the key to success for the Noale manufacturer, believes Carlos Checa.

The former rider, who now comments for DAZN, looked at the current reality of the new #89 team, and how it’s going to go through a very important phase now: ‘Romano Albesiano is no longer there, which, well, I don’t know if he’ll be missed and Aprilia will have to be restructured a bit’.

Although the man in charge is no longer there, he, like Aleix Espargaró, has gone to Honda (in the case of the #41 to be a test rider), and Aprilia is even, at certain stages, outperforming his reference bike on the grid, the Ducati Desmosedici, and now with Martín’s reinforcement, can he take the step he needs to launch a real bid for the title? That’s what Checa said, with the brand’s new recruit potentially “the key”:

– So, it’s true that for me it could be that it’s one of the bikes that’s closest, not constantly, but in some moments even above the Ducati and maybe with the entry of Jorge Martín and with the moment of form he has, I believe he can contribute a lot.
