Bhagavad Gita teachings: Bhagwat Geeta is not just a religious scripture but a science of living. In this, Lord Shri Krishna has explained the nature of man, his actions and the purpose of life in simple words. In the sixteenth chapter of Gita, “Daivasur Sampadvibhag Yoga”, Shri Krishna, while describing the divine and demonic qualities present within man, has mentioned three such defects, which he has called the direct cause of destruction. These are lust, anger and greed. Shri Krishna says that these three defects hollow out a person’s intelligence, character and life from within. Therefore, the person who survives these, achieves success, peace and respect in life.

Three ‘great sins’ leading to destruction

In verse number 21 of the Sixteenth Chapter, Lord Shri Krishna has clearly explained about three such vices, which have been called the three gates of hell which destroy the human soul. These three great sins completely ruin a person’s life and divert them from the higher goals of life.

Kama (excessive lust and desire)

cause of destruction: When man’s desires become unlimited, he can go to any extent to fulfill them. This prompts him to commit immoral acts, exploit others and forget his duties.

Result: This bad quality always keeps the person unsatisfied. When desires are not fulfilled, sadness and anger arise, and when they are fulfilled, more desires are born. Thus, man is never able to achieve peace and satisfaction.

Anger

Reason for wastage: Anger destroys intelligence. In the second chapter of Gita itself, it is said that anger leads to stupidity (indiscretion), stupidity leads to confusion of memory (loss of recognition of right and wrong), and confusion of memory destroys intelligence. When intelligence is destroyed, man’s downfall is certain.

Result: In anger, a person takes such decisions or speaks such words due to which his relationships, health and career are all ruined. It not only harms others but also destroys the mental peace of the person himself.

Greed

Reason for wastage: A greedy person thinks only about his own selfishness. He becomes so busy in accumulating wealth that he abandons human qualities like justice, righteousness, and mercy. Greed pushes him towards sinful acts like theft, cheating and injustice.

Result: Greed makes a person miser and selfish. He is unable to help others and always lives in a feeling of deprivation, no matter how much money he has. It weakens social and family relationships.

“Etairvimuktah kaunteya tamodvaraistribhirnarah. Acharatyatmanah shreyastato yaati paraan gatim.” (Bhagwat Geeta 16.22)

Meaning: In verse number 22 of the sixteenth chapter, Lord Shri Krishna says that O son of Kunti! The man who becomes free from these three gates of hell, behaves for his own welfare and as a result attains the supreme state.
