AR Rahman and Saira Banu Divorce: After the news of divorce with Saira went viral, AR Rahman has posted a story on his Instagram account. In this he said- ‘We request you to respect our privacy in this difficult time’. Through this post, it has been confirmed by Rehman that the news of his divorce is true. 29 years ago i.e. on March 12, 1995, 27 year old AR Rahman married 21 year old Saira Banu. This was an arranged marriage of both of them. The story of their marriage is also very interesting.
Actually, Rehman’s real name was Dilip Kumar Rajagopal. He was born in Madras, Tamil Nadu. At the age of 22, he and his family accepted Islam and since then Dilip Kumar became Allah Rakha Rahman i.e. AR Rahman. When Rehman’s mother Karima Begum decided to get her son married, Rehman put three conditions before his mother. His first condition was that his future wife should be educated. Actually, due to his struggle, Rehman did not get a chance to study much and hence he wanted his wife to be educated.

AR Rahman wanted a decent wife.
Rahman’s second condition was that his wife should love music and according to the third condition, he also had to see decency in his wife. It was not easy for Kareena Begum to find a wife for her son as per her three conditions. Eventually he heard about a girl and he liked that girl for his Rehman. But there are interesting twists in this story too.

Actually, Karima Begum had preferred the younger daughter of a famous businessman of Chennai for her son. That businessman had two daughters, Saira Banu and Mehar. Karima Biwi had gone to Mehar to confirm her son’s relationship, but she liked Mehar’s elder sister Saira and she confirmed Rehman’s relationship with Saira. Saira was only 21 years old when she got married to AR Rahman. Both have three children. His elder daughter Khatija Rehman, also a musician like her father, married Riyasdeen Sheikh Mohammed two years ago.

Armaan’s second daughter Rahima Rehman and his son AR Amin are also singers. Amin started his career with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film O Kadhal Kanmani.
