Ange Postecoglou expressed disappointment over Tottenham’s lack of composure after they conceded a late equaliser to Roma in a 2-2 Europa League draw.
Spurs led twice at home, with Son Heung-min scoring an early penalty and Brennan Johnson restoring the lead in the 33rd minute. However, Mats Hummels scored in injury time, leaving Tottenham outside the top eight on goal difference.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Postecoglou said, “It’s frustrating, particularly when they score so late in the game. But it was a good game. We should have put it to bed early, and it’s disappointing not to see it through. We should have shown a bit more composure.” Despite dominating much of the match, Spurs couldn’t secure victory.
Tottenham had several chances cleared off the line and kept Roma in contention. Postecoglou acknowledged Roma’s quality, noting their strong previous season despite current struggles. He believed his team had opportunities to win but failed to capitalise on them.
Fraser Forster stepped up as goalkeeper following Guglielmo Vicario’s ankle fracture. Postecoglou praised Forster’s performance, highlighting his five crucial saves during the match. “He did well. We expect that from him. He is a very experienced goalkeeper, and he did his part,” Postecoglou added.
This draw marked Tottenham’s first failure to win a home group stage match in the Europa League since October 2014 against Besiktas. They had previously won ten consecutive such games before this result.
Statistical Dominance Despite Draw
Despite dominating statistics with an expected goals (xG) total of 3.61 from 24 attempts compared to Roma’s 2.36 from 18 shots, Spurs couldn’t secure victory. Postecoglou acknowledged Roma’s strength: “They are a good side. There is a reason why they are in the Europa League.”
Looking ahead, Tottenham will face Fulham in Premier League action on Sunday at home. They have lost only one of their last 14 top-flight home games against Fulham, winning ten and drawing three.
The match highlighted Tottenham’s need for composure and finishing ability as they aim to improve their standing both domestically and in Europe.
