New Delhi: The air quality of Delhi and neighbouring states continues to deplete and is still in the ‘very poor’ category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) at 324 on November 23rd.

As per a report, Ophthalmologists in the national capital are noticing a sharp rise in the number of patients suffering from eye conditions, such as burning, itching eyes. The problems are being reported due to exposure of high levels of air pollution. Around 40 per cent of patients visiting the doctors complain of eye problems.

Dr Digvijay Singh, Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Narayana Hospital, Gurugram told News9, “Owing to the high levels of pollution in Delhi/NCR, individuals are experiencing a range of eye issues, including dryness, burning, blurred vision, conjunctivitis, and discomfort characterized by itching, redness, discharge, and swelling of the eyelids. Prolonged exposure to air pollution can lead to chronic inflammation and dryness in more severe cases. Also, air purifiers cause increased dryness of the eyes.”

Accoridng to a survey conducted by the Local Circles revealed that 75 per cent of individuals in the national capital suffered eye-buring issues last month. The toxic air quality levels in the country are endangering the lives of over 30 million people. Apart from the eye health, the poor air quality is affecting people’s lungs, and other body organs.

Ways to reduce the risk

Dr Singh shared some easy ways to prevent eye issues:

To reduce these risks, it is recommended to wear protective sunglasses or plain glasses when outdoors.

Regularly rinsing the eyes with cold water and using lubricating eye drops (as prescribed by an eye specialist) is advised.

Avoid using contact lenses, ensure thorough handwashing, and refrain from touching your eyes.

Timely consultation with an eye specialist is crucial if symptoms arise, especially in the prevalent toxic air conditions.
