Wrong release date kept this film below hit status

Akshay Kumar’s recent outing, Welcome To The Jungle, is nearing the end of its theatrical run, with its final India nett expected to be around Rs. 135 crores. The comedy drama opened well at the box office, but later dropped noticeably on weekdays. However, more than the weekday drops, it was the release date that hurt the film the most.

In the second weekend of Welcome To The Jungle, YRF’s Alpha hit the big screens, taking away a massive number of screens and shows. Though Alpha received bad reports, YRF’s stronghold over distribution ensured the film had a solid show count, curtailing the second-weekend business of the Akshay Kumar starrer.

In the third weekend of Welcome To The Jungle, Ajay Devgn’s Dhamaal 4 arrived in theatres, which totally ended the former’s run. Since both catered to a similar set of audiences, the new release attracted moviegoers, and the further reduction in screens restricted Welcome To The Jungle to semi-hit status, as per trade.

Alpha also faced a similar issue with Dhamaal 4, but since it had bad word-of-mouth, the competition was never its problem. On the other hand, Dhamaal 4, which released last, is heading towards a strong lifetime figure and has already attained the hit status.
