Indian cinema was celebrated and honoured at the 72nd National Film Awards press conference. Movies certified in the country in 2024 were considered for selection. From critically acclaimed films like Mammootty’s Bramayugam, Rakshit Shetty-backed Mithya to Yami Gautam’s political thriller Article 370 and Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion, the jury named some of the best titles and recognised the efforts of the actors. Article 370
received a National Award for Article 370. The political drama, directed by Aditya Jambhale, also won the Best Feature Film award. Article 370 revolves around an intelligence agent who, after an incident in Kashmir, is selected for a secret mission by the Prime Minister’s joint secretary to combat terrorism by rendering Article 370 ineffective. Kalki 2898 AD
Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani starred in . Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film won multiple awards. Kalki 2898 AD was named as the Best Feature Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Production Design. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows the story of Ashwatthama, who has to protect SUM-80’s unborn child. It is the first part of the Kalki Cinematic Universe. The film is heavily inspired by Hindu scriptures. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Dhanush received a Special Mention for , which was also declared as Best Film Promoting National, Social Values. Set in the pre-independence era, the film is about a man who fights against the British-led Indian military after witnessing a terrible crime. is one of the best horror films ever made in Malayalam cinema. Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, the story revolves around the age-old Kerala, where Tantra/Maya was an everyday reality, Thevan, a folk singer of the Paanan caste, loses his way after narrowly escaping from a slave market. This encounter leads him to discover an ancient tradition that profoundly affects his fate. Mammootty won the Best Actor award. The film also received the Best Cinematography award. Pushpa 2: The Rule
is directed by Sukumar. The film follows the story of Pushpa Raj (Allu Arjun), a Red Sanders mafia. After the events of Pushpa: The Rise, Pushpa gets into a fierce battle with Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat (Fahadh Faasil), a ruthless police officer. Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi’s critically acclaimed is a tribute to the valiant Major Varadarajan, who lost his life in a counterterrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir and was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his extraordinary courage. A 11-year-old Mithun, fondly called Mithya, has to move out of his hometown after the death of his parents. The film follows his journey of navigating through life’s challenges. Directed by Sumanth Bhat, the movie stars Athish S Shetty, Prakash Thuminad and Roopashree Vorkady. The Best Supporting Actress award went to Roopashree, while Mithya won the Best Kannada Film title.
