IND vs ENG: India’s Batting Faces Stern Test at Lord’s Ahead of Series-Deciding ODI

India has one final opportunity to finish its England tour on a high when it takes on the hosts in the third and deciding ODI at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground on July 19 . After winning the opening match, India suffered a defeat in Cardiff, allowing England to level the three-match series 1-1.

As the teams prepare for the decider, India’s batting lineup will be under the spotlight, with several key players carrying modest records-or no experience at all-at the iconic venue.

Lord’s Presents a Unique Challenge

While senior players such as Virat KohliRohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah have played at Lord’s before, several members of the current squad-including Shubman GillShreyas IyerIshan KishanShivam Dube, and Axar Patel-are set to play their first ODI at the ground.

Although Gill has previously featured in a Test at Lord’s, many of India’s current batters will be experiencing the conditions there for the first time in the 50-over format.

Virat Kohli Yet to Crack the Lord’s Code

Virat Kohli’s overall international record is among the finest in cricket, but Lord’s remains one of the few venues where he has struggled.

In three ODIs at the ground, Kohli has scored 77 runs, with a highest score of 45, and is yet to register a half-century there.

Rohit Sharma’s Record Also Raises Concerns

Rohit Sharma has also found runs hard to come by at Lord’s. In two ODIs at the venue, the opener has managed just 15 runs.

KL Rahul’s record is similarly limited, having been dismissed without scoring in his only ODI appearance at the ground.

New Challenge for India’s Middle Order

Several of India’s younger batters will be making their ODI debut at Lord’s.

Among them, Shubman Gill is the only player with previous international experience at the venue, having played a Test match there in 2025, where he scored 22 runs across both innings.

The unfamiliar conditions could make the batting challenge even tougher in such an important match.

Mixed Form Heading Into the Decider

India’s batting has produced mixed performances during the ODI series so far:

  • Virat Kohli: 0 and 65
  • Shubman Gill: 80 and 31
  • Shreyas Iyer: 35 and 66
  • Rohit Sharma: 37 runs across two innings

While Kohli, Gill, and Iyer have all shown glimpses of form, Rohit is yet to make a significant contribution, adding to concerns ahead of the series finale.

All Eyes on India’s Batters

With the series hanging in the balance, India will need its batting unit to adapt quickly to Lord’s conditions. Experienced players will be expected to lead from the front, while those making their first ODI appearance at the venue will have an opportunity to make a lasting impression.
