Government’s strong attack on piracy of OTT content, 3100+ channels banned on Telegram in one stroke. Indian Government Orders Telegram To Block Over 3100 Channels For Piracy

The central government has ordered the removal of 3,100+ channels of Telegram for copyright infringement. The reason for this action taken on the complaint of OTT platforms is illegal piracy of films and web series.

New Delhi: Taking major action on Telegram, the Central Government has ordered the removal of more than 3,100 channels. These channels are accused of violating copyright rules. According to the report of news agency ANI, the government had asked Telegram to remove this channel within three hours.

Piracy was happening indiscriminately on Telegram

  • The government was receiving complaints from big OTT platforms like JioCinema and Amazon Prime Video. In these complaints it was said that many Telegram channels were leaking their content illegally. Investigation revealed that these channels were openly violating the Copyright Act of 1957. These channels were illegally providing copyrighted content of OTT platforms, such as movies and web series, to their users.
  • After the copyright violation was confirmed, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting directed Telegram to remove this content under the Information Technology Act, 2000. Actually, large files are easily shared on Telegram and identity also remains hidden. Taking advantage of this, people share content illegally.
  • This action comes after another incident that happened just a few days ago, when the government had banned five OTT platforms on charges of obscene content. Earlier in July 2025 also, 22 OTT platforms and websites were banned for the same reason.
