The rivalry between Jofra Archer and ,which had already started heating up in the opening ODI, flared up again during the second match at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
The two fast bowlers found themselves in a heated exchange while battling it out in a tense lower-order showdown. With India struggling at 233 all out in just 44 overs, Archer saw his chance.
After taking two wickets in quick succession, the England speedster went after Brar with an aggressive field and a series of short balls aimed right at his body. The tension peaked in the 40th over when Archer charged in from around the wicket, delivering a sharp bouncer that rose awkwardly towards Brar’s upper body. The Indian left-hander attempted to evade it at the last moment, but the ball slammed into his bicep, sparking yet another fiery exchange between the two as the competition intensified.
The blow clearly left Brar in pain, prompting the medical team to rush onto the field to provide treatment before the game could continue. During his short time at the crease, the young pacer managed to score seven runs off 15 balls. Earlier in the match, he had bowled 10 overs, taking 2 wickets for 67 runs. On the other hand, Archer wrapped up his spell with impressive figures of 3 for 47 as England successfully chased down the target, finishing at 235 for 6 in just 44.1 overs. This victory by four wickets leveled the three-match series at 1-1.
ICC’s Warning Kept Gurnoor Brar In Focus Ahead of 2nd ODI
The clash in Cardiff took place just within 24 hours of the ICC punishing Brar for an incident in the first ODI at Edgbaston. The Indian fast bowler was found guilty of violating Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct which concerns an improper or dangerous delivery of a ball toward a player in an international game. Accordingly, Brar has been handed an official warning and one demerit point.
It all happened in the eighth over when Brar picked up the ball from his own bowling and threw it towards Ben Duckett while he was batting in England’s innings in the opening match of the series. It was seen as an improper and dangerous act by the officials. This incident was charged by the on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Mike Burns as well as the third umpire Sam Nogajski and fourth umpire Russell Warren. Brar accepted the punishment offered by the match referee Richie Richardson; hence, no hearing was necessary. An ICC Level 1 offense could get an official reprimand, a maximum of 50 per cent match fee and two demerit points.
