The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched an urgent search for a new Men’s Test Head Coach, with a strong contingent of highly successful Indian Premier League (IPL) strategists reportedly dominating a nine-man shortlist.
This intense recruitment drive follows Brendon McCullum’s departure from the red-ball role on July 12, 2026, marking the end of the ‘Bazball’ era.
McCullum, aged 44, who took charge in May 2022, will continue his tenure as England’s white-ball coach until after the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. His exit from the Test setup came after a significant dip in results, including a crushing 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia during the 2025/26 winter and a subsequent 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand. The period also saw former captain Ben Stokes announce his international retirement.
IPL Brains Leading the Race
As per Daily Mail, the ECB is keen to leverage the tactical acumen found within the global T20 franchise circuit, with several prominent IPL coaches making the cut for the top job. The board hopes to finalize an appointment before England’s three-match Test series against Pakistan kicks off at Headingley on August 19, 2026, though an interim solution remains an option if necessary.
Key IPL figures reportedly on the shortlist include:
Andy Flower: The former England coach is widely considered the frontrunner. Flower has enjoyed immense success as Head Coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), guiding them to an IPL title in 2025. He also leads London Spirit in The Hundred. The ECB is reportedly open to allowing him to manage both roles.
Justin Langer: The former Australian head coach, known for his disciplinarian approach, is currently the Head Coach of IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), a role he has held since July 2023.
Stephen Fleming: Having recently concluded a remarkable 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) where he led them to five IPL titles, Fleming’s newfound availability has reignited ECB interest. He had previously declined England’s advances in 2022 due to his IPL commitments.
Kumar Sangakkara: The Sri Lankan legend serves as the Director of Cricket for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL, having guided the team to the 2022 IPL final.
Tom Moody: Currently the Global Director of Cricket for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Moody brings extensive international and franchise coaching experience, including a stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
Other Notable Candidates
The broader nine-man shortlist also features a mix of domestic and international coaching talent, emphasizing the global nature of the ECB’s search. Other names reportedly under consideration include:
Jonathan Trott: Former England batter, who impressed as Afghanistan’s head coach, leading them to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Richard Dawson: The Glamorgan coach, who has previous experience within the England coaching setup.
Mike Hesson: Former New Zealand and current Pakistan white-ball coach.
Adi Birrell: Former coach of Ireland and Hampshire.
England’s managing director Rob Key will lead the selection process, with the aim of rebuilding the Test squad and targeting success in next year’s home Ashes series. The prominence of IPL coaches on the shortlist underscores the growing influence of franchise cricket in shaping the leadership landscape of international teams.
