Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the Indian team management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and selectors, to provide greater backing to left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav as India prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Ashwin said Kuldeep remains a match-winning bowler and should be given consistent opportunities to build confidence and establish himself as India’s frontline spinner.
Ashwin’s comments came after India’s six-wicket victory over England in the ODI series, where the team selected spin-bowling all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar ahead of Kuldeep. Speaking on his YouTube channel “Ash Ki Baat,” Ashwin said he believes both finger-spinning all-rounders may not fit into India’s ideal combination for the 2027 World Cup and that Kuldeep’s role could become crucial in the tournament.
The former off-spinner highlighted Kuldeep’s ability to bowl effectively in different phases of an innings and pointed to his record in South Africa, the venue for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Ashwin said the team management needs to invest in Kuldeep’s confidence by giving him more opportunities and treating him as a key wicket-taking option rather than a backup spinner.
Ashwin also discussed India’s search for an all-rounder option following injuries to players such as Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Hardik Pandya. While praising Shivam Dube’s recent contributions, including his six overs of bowling, Ashwin said Dube should not be considered India’s first-choice ODI all-rounder. He backed Hardik Pandya as the preferred option, followed by Nitish Kumar Reddy, with Dube as a reserve choice if injuries affect the squad.
The former cricketer also praised captain Shubman Gill for his recent performances with the bat and his leadership qualities. Ashwin said Gill’s batting form, captaincy experience with Gujarat Titans in the IPL, and leadership of the Test team indicate that he has the potential to become an authoritative leader in the ODI format. He added that Gill has already gained significant international experience and can handle challenges in overseas conditions.
Ashwin further identified young fast bowler Gurnoor Brar as an exciting prospect for Indian cricket across formats. He praised the pacer’s height, pace, and potential while stressing the importance of managing his workload and preventing injuries. Ashwin said that with proper development, Brar could become a valuable long-term asset for the national team.
