Actor Shah Rukh Khan and his family have received a major legal relief after the Supreme Court, on Tuesday, dismissed a petition challenging the renovation of their Mumbai home, Mannat.
Interestingly, the SC verdict clears the way for the planned makeover of the iconic bungalow.
Supreme Court dismisses plea against Mannat renovation
The petition filed by Mumbai-based activist Santosh Daundkar had challenged the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for the project, claiming that the approval violated environmental rules. Notably, Santosh had earlier approached the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had rejected his plea in September 2025.
Now, on Tuesday, July 14, a Supreme Court Bench consisting of Justices Surya Kant, Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan dismissed Daundkar’s appeal, declining to overturn the NGT’s decision. Additionally, the court also expressed doubts about the credibility of the petition.
During the hearing, Senior Advocate Shoeb Alam, appearing for the petitioner, argued that the case should not be treated differently just because it involved a prominent film star. Additionally, he also highlighted that Santosh had previously exposed the Adarsh Housing Society scam and was a respected activist.
Nevertheless, the bench clarified that Shah Rukh Khan’s celebrity status had no bearing on its decision. “We are in no way influenced by all of this,” Justice Sanjay Kumar Bagchi said during the proceedings.
About Mannat’s renovation
For the unversed, Shah Rukh Khan had recently received legal clearance from the Supreme Court to carry out renovation and expansion of his iconic Bandra bungalow, Mannat. The renovation includes the addition of two residential floors to the existing structure. Meanwhile, the family has temporarily relocated elsewhere while the property undergoes extensive expansion and renovation.
Mannat is undoubtedly one of Mumbai’s most recognisable celebrity homes. It has long been a landmark for Shah Rukh Khan’s fans, as every year thousands gather outside the Bandra bungalow on his birthday to catch a glimpse of the actor. He ritualistically steps onto the balcony of his house to greet his fans, making it one of Bollywood’s most enduring fan traditions.
Meanwhile, on the film front, Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up for the release of his next, Siddharth Anand’s King.
