Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has congratulated World No. 1 Jannik Sinner following his successful defence of the Wimbledon men’s singles title, recognising the achievement as a significant moment in Italian sporting history.
Posting on X after Sinner’s victory, Meloni praised the 24-year-old for securing the prestigious Grand Slam championship for a second year running. She stated: “With the victory at #Wimbledon, secured for the second year in a row, #Sinner writes another page in the history of Italian sport. Thank you, champion!”
Sinner retained his Wimbledon crown by defeating Alexander Zverev 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 in the men’s singles final. This win made him the tenth player to hold onto the Wimbledon men’s singles title and extended his winning streak against Zverev to ten matches.
After an early exit at the French Open, Sinner secured his sixth ATP title of the year, while Zverev’s attempt to win consecutive Grand Slam titles ended despite reaching his second straight major final.
By defending his Wimbledon title, Sinner increased his lead over arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz in the race for ‘Big Titles’. The victory marked Sinner’s 17th Big Title-a category that includes Grand Slam championships, ATP Finals trophies, ATP Masters 1000 titles, and Olympic singles gold medals-compared to Alcaraz’s 15, according to the ATP website.
This Wimbledon win was Sinner’s fifth Grand Slam title and his first major championship since last year’s triumph at the All England Club. Notably, all five of his Grand Slam titles have been won since the start of the 2024 season.
The competition between Sinner and Alcaraz has changed markedly in recent months. While Alcaraz led 15-11 in Big Titles following his Australian Open victory earlier this year, Sinner has since dominated the top ATP events, winning six of the last seven Big Title tournaments.
