London: Defending champion Jannik Sinner continued his impressive run at The Championships, Wimbledon, defeating Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3, 7-6(0), 6-3 in the Round of 16 to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
The victory marked Sinner’s fifth consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance, making the 24-year-old the youngest player to achieve five successive men’s singles last-eight appearances at the All England Club since Pete Sampras accomplished the feat in 1996.
Sinner extends remarkable winning run
The world No. 1 has now won 11 consecutive matches at Wimbledon and advanced to his 15th Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Sinner also improved his 2026 season record to 41 victories and has now won 34 of his last 35 matches, highlighting the consistency that has made him one of the dominant players on the ATP Tour.
After the match, Sinner praised his opponent’s style of play.
“He’s very tricky to face. On this surface, his game suits it extremely well. Considering everything, I tried to stay a bit more aggressive. I had a few chances in the second set but couldn’t convert them. Still, I’m very happy with my performance today. I’m trying to improve a little every day, and I’m pleased with how I played today.”
Clinical display on Centre Court
Sinner took control of the match early by breaking Mochizuki in the eighth game of the opening set before serving it out 6-3 in just over half an hour.
The Japanese player raised his level in the second set, matching Sinner game for game and forcing a tie-break.
However, the Italian produced a flawless performance in the breaker, winning all seven points to take a commanding two-set lead.
Sinner maintained the momentum in the third set, breaking serve early to move 2-0 ahead and never allowing Mochizuki an opportunity to mount a comeback.
The defending champion closed out another 6-3 set to complete a comfortable straight-sets victory.
Quarterfinal clash awaits
Sinner will next face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinals.
Struff advanced after Hubert Hurkacz retired from their Round of 16 match with the deciding set level at 4-4.
At 36 years of age, Struff became the oldest man in the Open Era to reach his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal, setting up an intriguing contest against the defending Wimbledon champion.
Conclusion
With another commanding performance, Jannik Sinner has moved one step closer to successfully defending his Wimbledon title. His consistent form and impressive winning streak make him one of the favourites as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
