PM Modi launches Maruti Suzuki’s first electric SUV
With this introduction, conducted at the company’s Hansalpur facility in Gujarat, Maruti Suzuki has officially entered the electric vehicle segment, paving the way for India’s contribution towards creating the future of e-mobility. This is a historic milestone for India’s path to electric mobility, and Gujarat has become an electric vehicle manufacturing hub.
The launch by PM Modi also marks a key milestone and a big push in his Made-in-India initiative. The indigenous and ingenious e-Vitara is set to hit global markets, including Europe and Japan, marking a push for self-reliance and green mobility in India and an imprint in the global auto arena. The e-Vitara is positioned as Suzuki’s first global strategic electric car.
PM Modi addressed the occasion, stressing the significance of clean mobility and India’s vision to become a world leader in sustainable transport. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Japan’s Ambassador to India, Keiichi Ono, also graced the inaugural launch.
Global debut and exports
The e-Vitara is being rolled out as a global product. The Gujarat production will serve the Indian market as well as exports to 100 countries, including Europe. Indian consumers may see its formal launch by early September. The model has already been launched in the UK, where it goes against electric SUVs like the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6 and MG ZS EV.
Powertrain and performance
The e-Vitara has two battery pack variants – a 49 kWh and a 61.1 kWh. The smaller unit makes 142 bhp and has an WLTP-tested range of almost 344 km, while the bigger unit has up to 426 km as range in its front-wheel drive variant. An all-wheel drive model has a range of 395 km with 181 bhp. Both units have DC fast charging capability, with a charge to 80 percent taking around 45 minutes.
Features and safety
Internally, the e-Vitara has a 10.1-inch infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, and a 10-way adjustable driver’s seat. Safety features are seven airbags, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and a 360-degree camera.
