Spain vs Austria Match Result: La Roja Seal Comfortable Victory, Advance To Round of 16

Spain delivered another brilliant performance on the biggest stage as La Roja brushed aside Austria with a commanding display to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.

Luis de la Fuente’s men were inch perfect with their passing and rarely allowed Austria a fightback. Mikel Oyarzabal’s brace and Pedro Porro’s maiden international goal sealed an emphatic victory in Los Angeles.

Spain national football team will now head into the last 16 full of confidence, where they await the Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, while Austria’s spirited World Cup journey comes to an end.

Fantastic Spain

Spain controlled proceedings from the opening whistle and nearly found an early breakthrough when Lamine Yamal tested Alexander Schlager inside the opening minute. Marc Cucurella then thought he had opened the scoring from a corner, only for the effort to be ruled out after a foul on the Austrian goalkeeper.

Austria held firm for much of the first half, but Spain’s relentless pressure finally paid off in the 36th minute. Cucurella once again turned provider, driving a low cross into the box for Mikel Oyarzabal, who guided a first-time finish into the far corner to hand La Roja a deserved lead.

Luis de la Fuente later praised his side’s complete performance, insisting his players delivered when it mattered most. “The big teams turn up when their presence is needed. Today we’ve seen a great game. I’m happy because in all aspects we’ve been almost perfect, but we have to keep improving,” said the Spanish coach.

Although Spain maintained the same pace after the interval, Austria tried to make a comeback but, after missing clear chances, their morale faded.

Later, Alex Baena floated in an inviting cross midway through the second half and Pedro Porro timed his run perfectly to head home his first-ever international goal, putting Spain firmly in control.

Austria never truly recovered from that blow as Spain continued to dictate possession with ease. David Alaba produced a superb goal-line clearance to deny Yamal, but there was no stopping Oyarzabal in the closing stages.

The striker capped off a memorable evening in the 89th minute, sliding in another excellent Cucurella delivery to complete his brace and put the result beyond doubt.

Reflecting on his performance, Oyarzabal admitted it had been another difficult test despite the convincing scoreline. “I’m happy to help the team and to get through another round. We knew it would be a difficult game because they’re a very physical side, but we’ve had a very good day,” the forward said.

Austria captain David Alaba acknowledged Spain’s superiority while admitting the defeat would sting.

“Until the first goal, we were still in the game. But they have so much quality with the ball and after 90 minutes it’s difficult to keep chasing them. It hurts because this team has big dreams,” Alaba said.

With their fluid football, attacking depth and growing confidence, La Roja now head into the Round of 16 looking every bit like genuine World Cup contenders once again.
