Producer Boney Kapoor had acquired the remake rights to K. Bhagyaraj’s Tamil hit Enga Chinna Rasa, with Sridevi initially signed to star opposite Anil Kapoor. However, after director Indra Kumar came on board, Sridevi stepped away from the project without publicly revealing her reasons. Her exit reportedly upset Boney Kapoor, who had backed Indra Kumar’s vision for the film.
Madhuri Dixit was then brought in as the female lead. At the time, the decision was met with skepticism within the film trade, as Madhuri had experienced a series of box-office disappointments despite earlier successes. Many believed casting her was a risky move.
Recalling that period, Indra Kumar said, “People warned me, why are you casting Madhuri? As it is she has flop films behind her name. This will also flop. But I went ahead with her and the rest is history.”
History proved him right. Released in April 1992, Beta emerged as one of the year’s biggest blockbusters. Madhuri’s powerful performance became one of the film’s biggest highlights, helping elevate the story beyond a conventional family drama. The film also demonstrated that emotionally driven, family-oriented entertainers with a strong female character could achieve massive commercial success.
