Mandi, formerly Mandav Nagar and Tibetan name Zahor, is a city located in Mandi district of the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is also the district headquarters and an important religious and cultural center of Himachal located on the banks of river Beas, which is the second largest district in the state after Shimla in terms of population. It is important from tourism point of view and the Navratri fair held here is quite famous. The city is known as the “Varanasi of the Hills” or “Chhoti Kashi” or “Kashi of Himachal”. Banaras (Kashi) has only 80 temples while Mandi has 81. Mandi Nagar was founded by Ajbar Sen in the year 1527. Mandi princely state existed till 1948. Later the main town was shifted from Old Mandi to New Mandi. The city contains the remains of many old palaces and remarkable specimens of architecture.
