Ravichandran Ashwin Takes Charge as Captain of Dublin Guardians in European T20 Premier League

Ashwin’s New Role in European T20 Premier League

Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian spin maestro, embarks on an exciting new chapter in his illustrious career as he has been appointed captain and mentor of the Dublin Guardians for the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League.

This new franchise-based tournament has received official approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Ashwin will play a dual role, not only leading the team on the field but also guiding its overall development.

The Dublin Guardians are owned by Rahul Dravid, a former captain and coach of India, marking a reunion of a successful player-coach partnership. During the launch event in Dublin, Dravid announced that he would take a step back from daily operations, allowing Ashwin to manage the team independently, making him the primary decision-maker.

Ashwin’s Career Transition

After concluding his international career and his last IPL season in 2025, Ashwin sought new ventures, focusing on opportunities abroad. He made headlines in 2025 by becoming the first Indian player to join a Big Bash League team, signing with Sydney Thunder, although he was unable to participate due to an injury. In early 2026, he made history again by becoming the first capped Indian international to join Major League Cricket (MLC) in the U.S., representing the San Francisco Unicorns.

Exciting Lineup for the ETPL

The European T20 Premier League has announced several high-profile international players ahead of its first season, which will include franchises in cities like Amsterdam, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Rotterdam. In addition to Ashwin, the league has attracted notable players such as Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Tim David, Glenn Maxwell, New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner, and South African stars Faf du Plessis and Heinrich Klaasen.

Ashwin’s Impressive Achievements

Ravichandran Ashwin enters this new league with an impressive track record in cricket. He retired from international play in December 2024 as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 537 dismissals at an average of 24.01 over 106 matches, only behind Anil Kumble’s 619. He also holds the record for the most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, totaling 37. Additionally, Ashwin has scored 3,503 runs, including six centuries, and is the only player in Test history to achieve over five centuries alongside 500 wickets. In limited-overs formats, he has taken 156 ODI wickets and 72 T20I wickets, playing a crucial role in India’s victories in the 2011 ICC World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
