Rajinikanth’s Coolie is continuing its strong run at the box office, despite a steep weekday drop after its blockbuster opening weekend.
Released on August 14, the film has now completed eight days in theatres and has managed to pull in ₹229.75 crore net across India, which is a commendable figure given the mixed reviews it received.
Coolie Box Office Collection – 8 Days
The film started with a thunderous opening, registering ₹65 crore net on Day 1, of which the Tamil version alone contributed ₹44.5 crore. Backed by Rajinikanth’s massive fan base, the extended Independence Day holiday and festive weekend helped it score big numbers, with the first four days together contributing nearly ₹195 crore net, as per Sacnilk data.
However, once the weekday phase began, the film saw sharp declines. From a ₹35.25 crore Sunday, collections dipped drastically to ₹12 crore on Monday, marking a nearly 66% fall. This trend continued through Tuesday (₹9.5 crore) and Wednesday (₹7.5 crore), before Thursday (Day 8) brought in around ₹6.25 crore net (early estimates), the data added.
In terms of occupancy, Coolie still managed a respectable turnout on its eighth day. The film posted an overall 17.67% Tamil occupancy on August 21. Evening and night shows contributed more strongly, with 19.11% and 20.09% occupancy, indicating that Rajinikanth fans continue to flock to theatres later in the day.
Occupancy Rate On 8th Day
Regional performance has been mixed. Chennai remains the strongest market with 27.25% overall occupancy across 710 shows, followed by Pondicherry (25.75%) and Trichy (22.5%). Other Tamil Nadu cities like Vellore (21.5%), Dindigul (20.5%), and Coimbatore (17.25%) also showed solid support. Outside Tamil Nadu, however, the response has been comparatively muted. Bengaluru managed just 11%, while Kerala cities like Kochi (9.25%) and Trivandrum (5.5%) underperformed. The Hindi belt too showed only moderate traction, with Mumbai at 7.5% and the NCR at 8% occupancy.
Language-wise, the Tamil version has been the backbone of the film’s revenue, contributing the lion’s share every day. Telugu versions performed decently during the opening weekend but saw a sharp fall post Monday, while Hindi and Kannada versions have remained steady but modest in scale.
Overall, Rajinikanth’s Coolie has crossed the ₹225 crore milestone within eight days, proving once again the superstar’s unmatched pull at the box office. However, the sharp weekday declines indicate that the film may not maintain its initial pace in the coming days.
With no major competitor releases in Tamil Nadu immediately, the movie still has room to add significantly to its total, though its performance in non-core markets will determine the size of its lifetime collections.
