“Idupu Kayitam” is the title of a film that has generated massive attention even before its release. Produced by Bunny Vas, the film has enjoyed huge publicity, with much of the buzz revolving around its unique title.
Many Telugu-speaking people, especially from Andhra Pradesh, were initially confused by the title.
Some even assumed it was the dubbed version of a film from another language, while others mocked it on social media without knowing its meaning.
In reality, “Idupu Kayitam” is an old Telangana term. Decades ago, before legal procedures became common in marital disputes, village elders would oversee separations between couples. The written note recording the separation was called an “Idupu Kayitam.”
The debate has now gone beyond the title itself.
Critics question why there is resistance to a regional Telugu word when audiences have readily accepted titles like Kantara, Palli Chattambi, Kothaloka, and even Mirai, which is not a Telugu word despite being a Telugu film. If such titles can be embraced, why object to a word that belongs to the Telugu language itself?
Unfortunately, the discussion has triggered unnecessary arguments between people from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on social media.
While the controversy has given the film greater visibility, many believe it is time to end the regional divide and celebrate the richness and diversity of the Telugu language.
