Donyell Malen is staying at Roma on a permanent deal after a prolific loan spell. Roma’s qualification for next season’s Champions League activated the purchase clause, and Malen has agreed a four-year contract until June 2030 after an impressive impact in Serie A.
Malen originally arrived from Aston Villa in January on loan for the rest of the campaign. The option to buy in that agreement turned into an obligation once Roma secured Champions League football. Those five months in the Italian capital convinced Roma to commit long term.
The Dutch forward scored 15 goals in 20 matches across all competitions during the campaign. One of those came on the final day, when Roma beat Hellas Verona 2-0. That strike underlined Malen’s influence as Roma completed a strong league finish.
In Serie A alone, Malen produced 14 goals for Roma in this season’s fixtures. The previous Roma player to register at least that many in a single top-flight campaign was Tammy Abraham in 2021-22, with 17 goals. Abraham needed 37 appearances, compared with Malen’s 18 league games.
Only Lautaro Martinez, with 17 league goals, scored more than Malen’s 14 in this Serie A season. Malen finished level with Tasos Douvikas. Among players with fewer than 20 appearances in a Serie A season under three points for a win, Malen’s numbers stand alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ronaldo.
Ibrahimovic scored 15 goals in 19 matches for Milan in 2020-21. Ronaldo delivered 14 goals in 19 league outings for Inter in 1998-99. Malen now joins those two as one of three players with the highest tallies under such appearance limits.
Gian Piero Gasperini described Malen’s initial arrival as a major step in Roma’s chase for Champions League qualification. Roma finished third in Serie A. That position confirmed a return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2017-18 season under Eusebio Di Francesco.
Roma also reached 73 points in this league campaign. The Giallorossi last went beyond 70 points in a Serie A season when they collected 77. Malen’s permanent move now ties a key attacking figure to Roma as the club prepares for Champions League football again.
