Marina Mabrey delivered a historic performance for the Toronto Tempo, pouring in 53 points in a dominant 125-97 win over the Los Angeles Sparks at Cola-Cola Coliseum.
The outburst matched the WNBA record for most points in a single game and came in the opening fixture of Toronto’s demanding nine-game homestand.
The guard’s scoring surge helped Toronto post 125 points, the highest total by any WNBA team in regulation time. The result moved the Tempo to 9-9 and fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings, while the Sparks slipped to 8-9 and now sit fifth in the Western Conference.
Mabrey’s 53 points tied the single-game mark first set by Liz Cambage in July 2018 and later matched by A’ja Wilson in August 2023. Mabrey also equalled the WNBA record for 3-pointers in one game, converting nine of 18 attempts from beyond the arc as Toronto controlled the contest.
The 29-year-old shot efficiently from every area, going 17-of-28 from the floor and 10-of-12 at the free-throw line. Across the last three games, Mabrey has now totalled 113 points, which stands as the highest scoring output over any three-game stretch in WNBA history, underlining this current offensive run.
Mabrey explained that the numbers were not on display during the game at Cola-Cola Coliseum. “There’s no stat board in our gym,” Mabrey said after the win. “After you get into a state like that, it’s kind of hard to know what you’re really doing, but my team-mates made it known, so I knew I was doing something good.”
Mabrey then reflected on the atmosphere as the points kept coming and the home crowd responded. “I think tonight was just my night from the 3-point line and from honestly everywhere. It was all going in! And then the fans, to have them chanting ‘MVP,’ I don’t know that I ever imagined that. But it was really a good feeling.”
Toronto coach Sandy Brondello offered a strong reaction to the display, comparing it to some of the WNBA’s top scorers. “I’ve been doing this for quite some time, I’ve never seen that. Even Diana Taurasi, and she could shoot it really well. I mean, to witness that was amazing.” Brondello’s comments underlined how rare such a performance remains.
There was also a notable playmaking feat for Toronto, as Julie Allemand finished with 14 assists without committing a turnover, tying the WNBA record for assists in a single game with no mistakes. Together with Mabrey’s record-equalling 53 points, those numbers framed a historic night for the Toronto Tempo against the Los Angeles Sparks.
