Fake BESCOM App Scam: A woman in Bengaluru lost Rs 14.60 lakh from fake BESCOM app. The fraudsters downloaded the app in the name of bill update and committed fraud by stealing OTP from the phone through malware.
Bengaluru: A 60-year-old woman from Vidyaranyapura in the city lost Rs 14.60 lakh after downloading a fake Bescom application. Officials said that this dangerous app contained malware like Remote Access Trojan (RAT), which gave cyber criminals access to their phones. With this they were able to obtain the one-time password (OTP) of his bank.
Rs 12 Extorted Rs 14 lakh by saying that
The female professor told the police that on November 25, she had received a call from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as a Bescom official and said that he would have to pay Rs 12 to update his bill.
Woman’s number hacked as soon as she downloaded the app
Since the amount was small, the woman had no doubt and tried to pay the amount by downloading ‘Bescom Bill Update.apk’, which the cyber criminal had shared with her on WhatsApp. Later, without their knowledge, OTPs were generated and forwarded to an unknown number of criminals.
