According to reports, Apple may refuse to comply with the Indian government’s order demanding preloading of this cyber security app on all iPhones. Reuters report said that Apple is planning to oppose this order to keep its user privacy safe.
Government order and deadline
The Indian Telecom Ministry recently issued a notification to major mobile manufacturing companies like Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi. As per the order, it is mandatory to preload the Sanchar Saathi app in all new devices. The app should also be pushed through software updates to devices already in the supply chain. 90 days were given for the entire process.
What is Apple’s stand?
According to reports, Apple will not comply with this order. The company will lodge its strong objection with the government. Apple says that there is no such provision worldwide, because such orders pose a threat to the security and privacy of iOS. Apple has made it clear that this order is not acceptable to them, although the company does not want to lead to a public dispute or legal action.
Why is Sanchar Sathi app mandatory for all phones?
The government says that the purpose of the Sanchar Sathi app is to track and block stolen phones, prevent cyber fraud, misuse of devices with duplicate or spoofed IMEI. But this order also gave rise to political and privacy debate. Opposition and privacy activists say the app could act as a ‘snooping tool’, giving the government access to India’s nearly 730 million smartphones.
