A34-year-old assistant professor at a reputed management institute in Vile Parle has accused her husband and his family of dowry-related harassment and misappropriating valuables worth Rs 1.72 crore. The Bhandup police have registered a case against her husband, parents-in-law and sister-in-law though no arrests have been made yet.
Alleged demands
According to the complaint, the woman, who married a Mumbai-based man in November 2024 through an arranged match, was allegedly taunted over gifts exchanged during the wedding. She claimed her besides seeking access to Rs 50 lakh transferred to her account by her parents. The woman said the situation worsened when she struggled to find employment after relocating to Mumbai.
Relationship breakdown
In April 2026, the woman handed over her jewellery to her husband before leaving for a training programme in Ahmedabad. She alleged that relations had deteriorated on returning, and she did not move back into the matrimonial home.
On June 20, She alleged that when she sought the return of her valuables, the family told her they would be handed over later. She told mid-day, “During follow-up discussions, the family denied having any knowledge of the valuables.”
