New Delhi: In the latest report, the Asia Power Index 2025 by Australia’s prestigious Lowy Institute, India has been described as the third largest power in the world in terms of defense capability.
India’s name appearing in this list after America and China is a big achievement in itself. According to the report, Operation Sindoor played an important role in this progress, which gave a strong message about India’s military capabilities at the global level.
Which countries has India left behind?
Along with military power, economic capability has also been given equal importance in the index. On both these parameters, India has overtaken developed countries like Japan, Russia, South Korea, and Australia. Whereas Pakistan is at the 16th position, which is far behind India.
What does the Asia Power Index measure?
This index, released every year, decides the ranking of countries on the basis of resources and influence. It includes 131 indicators and eight main parameters. These include:
- Military capability
- Defense network
- Economic power
- Economic relations
- Diplomatic and cultural influence
- Flexibility
- Future prospects
A country needs a score of 40 or more to qualify as a “major power.” This time a total of 27 countries have been included in the list.
Why did India’s ranking improve?
According to the report, India’s economy will grow at a fast pace in 2025. Due to this speed, India reached one position higher in terms of economic power, leaving Japan behind. Foreign investment flow into India has also increased, and India now ranks ninth in this sector.
What major change happened in terms of investment?
An important change in the report is that India has now come second in the world after America in terms of foreign direct investment. China has slipped to third place in this category, which is considered a big sign in terms of regional balance.
Where did you see the deficiency?
Despite strong performance in all sectors, India still lags behind in terms of defense network. India is ranked 11th in this category, which is even below the Philippines and Thailand. This is the area where improvement is said to be most needed.
