Has Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions Lost Its Creative Spark Since 2020?

Dharma Productions needs no introduction! The Karan Johar-owned production house has established itself as one of Bollywood’s most successful banners, delivering hits from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to Raazi, each presenting strong storytelling, grand visuals, emotional depth, memorable music, fresh narratives, and unique characters. But now, a viral video by creator Ashwyn Goveas has sparked a discussion: he claims that Dharma Productions has lost its creative spark since 2020—let’s find out.

In his Instagram video, Ashwyn boldly presented his opinion, saying that one needs to point out the terrible downfall of Dharma Productions. With his analysis, Ashwyn claimed that Dharma Productions has been chasing trends that work at the box office and attempting to benefit from them. The creator said, “Since the year 2020, Dharma Productions has had this habit of chasing whatever is working at the box office and kind of putting it in their favor.”

Explaining his points, Ashwyn pointed out how Dharma Productions got Tiger Shroff, Kartik Aaryan and Akshay Kumar on board with all of them doing good at the box office: “For example, if Tiger Shroff if giving blockbuster (Baaghi 2), cast him in Student Of The Year 2; If Kartik Aaryan is giving back-to-back hit (Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2/Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3) cast him in a forgettable rom-come (Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri); If Akshay Kumar is doing really well at the box office (Toilet, Mission Mangal, Airlift) cast him in a range of forgettable movies (Selfie, Kesair Chapter 2).”

Ashwyn, without hesitation, quoted his thought, emphasizing that in chasing the trends, Dharma Productions have forgotten how to make a movie in the first place, mentioning post-2020 films— from Gehraiyaan, Yodha, Nadaaniyan, Jug Jugg Jeeyo to Selfie, etc—all the movies that Dharma Productions has made seem generic and feel like “proper corporate schlock”.

Concluding his point, the creator stated that when a banner starts chasing trends and forgets the main purpose of making movies, it completely loses the core concept of a production house. He ended by suggesting that it’s time Dharma Productions should find where they are making the mistake.

In contrast, Dharma Productions’ next film is Udta Teer, a spy comedy starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, scheduled to release on September 11, 2026.
