Tuchel Urges England To Play With Freedom And Attack At World Cup

England move towards a crucial World Cup meeting with Ghana knowing a win at Boston Stadium would seal a place in the knockout phase, while also likely shaping Group L. Victory would confirm top spot if Croatia avoid defeat against Panama, keeping England in control after a strong start.

Harry Kane’s chase of history adds another layer to the fixture. Kane has scored five goals in five international matches against African opposition, including three in World Cups. Those came against Tunisia in 2018, when Kane struck twice, and against Senegal in 2022, underlining consistent impact on this stage.

If Kane scores against Ghana, the forward would move past Gary Lineker’s tally of 10 to become England’s leading scorer in World Cup history. Kane already plays a decisive role for club and country, and that record would further define this World Cup campaign for supporters and teammates.

Recent form supports that pursuit. England opened the tournament with a 4-2 win over Croatia, repeating an attacking pattern seen in earlier tournaments. Kane scored twice in that match, while Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also found the net, though some defensive lapses left areas for analysis before facing Ghana.

Thomas Tuchel, however, appears keen not to interfere with England’s attacking rhythm. I am a very happy and very lucky coach because they arrived with this mindset, so I didn’t have to get them in the mindset, Tuchel said. They arrived with it. Now it is the difficulty to keep them in this mindset.

Tuchel then drew on an artistic comparison. A very famous conductor gave the quote, ‘He doesn’t want to disturb the music and he doesn’t want to disturb the musicians.’ So that’s basically what we try to do in the coaching team. We don’t disturb the players, we don’t disturb the match. We just encourage them to play with freedom, especially in the attacking positions.

Tuchel also highlighted collective work without the ball. It is quite impressive at the moment, everyone buys into the idea of defending together. That’s what we did excellently in the second half [against Croatia], push out constantly into a high press. The game will play out in itself. We can’t predict what’s happening. I predict a little bit of a different game than Croatia because of the different approach, but who knows? We have to be ready to find answers to any question that is asked.

That approach reflects England’s broader World Cup pattern. They are targeting wins in both opening matches of a World Cup for only the fourth time, following similar starts in 1982, 2006 and 2018. Beating Ghana would match those campaigns and maintain momentum before the final Group L fixture.

Leadership from Kane remains central, something Declan Rice underlined when discussing the captain’s influence. For me, he is one of those players you’ll be telling the kids when you’re older that you got to play with Harry Kane. For me, that’s how good he is. He’s one of those players, Rice said of Kane. I’m very fortunate. One, he’s our captain, but two: how he leads by example every day, how he pushes in training. It’s not a surprise to me how good he is just because of the goals he scores in training, what he’s been doing at Bayern Munich, what he’s been doing in an England shirt. It’s been an honour to play with him. I’m very lucky that I get to play with a striker like him.

England’s 4-2 scoreline against Croatia was their first World Cup win by that margin since the 1966 final against West Germany, adding historical weight to the performance. With Group L progression now within reach against Ghana, Tuchel’s side balance attacking freedom with shared responsibility, while Kane stands on the verge of another personal record.
