Hyundai is preparing to further strengthen its SUV portfolio in India with the upcoming Bayon-based crossover, internally codenamed BC4i. The test mule has now  , offering a fresh look at its proportions and stance. Interestingly, the prototype was seen parked right next to a Maruti Victoris, giving a clear indication of the segment Hyundai is targeting.

Positioned Between Venue And Creta

Victoris, launched just a few months ago, has already emerged as the second best-selling SUV in the midsize segment. Hyundai Creta, however, continues to dominate the charts and remains the benchmark. With Bayon, Hyundai seems to be preparing a direct response to Victoris while also creating another layer of protection for Creta’s leadership position.

As seen in the latest spy shots, the SUV carries a distinctive crossover-like profile with an upright stance, roof rails and substantial body cladding. Compared to Venue, it appears noticeably larger and more spacious, while remaining smaller than Creta.

The sighting alongside Victoris is particularly interesting. Both SUVs appear to have a comparable footprint, reinforcing expectations that Hyundai intends to position Bayon in the growing 4.2-metre to 4.4-metre SUV space. This segment has gained significant traction in recent months as buyers seek something larger and more premium than compact SUVs, without stepping into higher price brackets.

Victoris has found strong acceptance since launch and currently sits just behind Creta in segment sales. Hyundai’s strategy could be to leverage Bayon to attract buyers who may otherwise consider Victoris, Grand Vitara, Hyryder or other midsize SUVs.

New Gen Design

While heavily camouflaged, several design cues remain visible. The test mule features chunkier wheel arches, a taller roofline and a wider-looking rear section. The front fascia is expected to feature Hyundai’s latest lighting signature with split headlamp elements and a wide grille treatment. The rear continues to showcase angular tail lamp elements similar to those seen on international Bayon models. New alloy wheel designs, pronounced body cladding and roof rails further enhance the SUV’s rugged appearance.

Likely To Get Petrol And CNG Options

Hyundai has already indicated that one of its upcoming SUVs will focus on broader market appeal. Industry sources suggest the Bayon-based SUV could be offered with naturally aspirated petrol powertrains along with a factory-fitted CNG option.

If launched with CNG, it could become Hyundai’s first SUV above four metres in length to offer the fuel option. A dual-cylinder CNG setup, similar to solutions adopted by rivals, is also a possibility as it helps preserve boot space while improving practicality. The focus is expected to be on efficiency, lower running costs and mass-market appeal rather than outright performance.

Feature-Rich Cabin Expected

Although the interior has not been revealed yet, Hyundai is unlikely to compromise on features. The SUV is expected to offer a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, connected car technology, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats and a comprehensive safety package. Higher variants could also receive ADAS features, helping Hyundai maintain its reputation for offering technology-loaded products. Pricing is likely to be lower than Creta.
