Delhi’s air is as poisonous as smoking 20 cigarettes, how to understand the condition of our city?

The third phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) has been implemented amid the suffocating air in Delhi.

The air of Delhi-NCR is becoming poisonous. At 9 am the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached the severe category. AQI was 425. Amidst the suffocating air, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented the third phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The CAQM sub-committee says that if the deterioration in air quality continues, the situation may become worse.

Delhi’s air is not called suffocating for no reason. The amount of poison being inhaled is equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes. Now the question is, which level of AQI indicates a serious situation, the air starts becoming suffocating and which level is equivalent to smoking how many cigarettes?

There is as much poison in Delhi’s air as smoking 20 cigarettes.

If we compare Delhi’s air with cigarette smoke, a shocking figure emerges. According to the report of Times of India, if AQI reaches 500 then it is considered the most serious category. If the AQI of your city is 500 or more, it means that the poison of smoke from more than 30 cigarettes is reaching your body.

Delhi Ncr Aqi Vs Cigarettes Smoke

At 450 AQI, the air poison is equivalent to smoking 25-30 cigarettes and at 401-450 AQI, it is equivalent to smoking 16-20 cigarettes. Not only this, the poison reaching the body at the level of 301-400 and 11-15 at 201-300 AQI is equivalent to smoking 6-10 cigarettes. Whereas, 0-50 AQI level is considered better.

How To Understand Aqi

How is AQI created?

Air Quality Index i.e. Air Quality Index shows whether the air of your city is good or bad. There are air quality monitoring stations in every city to check the air quality. These stations measure the levels of many types of pollutants. Like PM2.5 – very fine dust particles, PM10 – large dust particles, air quality index is prepared by combining the data of NO₂ (nitrogen dioxide), SO₂ (sulphur dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide), O₃ (ozone), NH₃ (ammonia), Pb (lead).

What does the Air Quality Index reveal?

AQI reveals many things. Like how poisonous the air is. Go out for a walk or not. Whether to send it to children or the elderly or not. When do you need to work out indoors and when can you go out? Many decisions can be taken on this basis. Therefore, whenever you step out of the house, take a look at the AQI.
