Story of Bhairavnath’s birth (Kaal Bhairav Katha Hindi)
Two major stories of the origin of Bhairavnath are found in religious scriptures: – First, during the war between Lord Shiva and Andhakasura, many Bhairavs were born from the streams of Shiva’s blood. Secondly, when Brahma insulted Shiva, Baba Kaal Bhairav was born due to the anger of Lord Shiva. Let us read these stories in more detail.
War between Lord Shiva and Andhakasura
Once when there was a battle between Lord Shiva and the demon Andhakasura, Shiva was hit on his chest by Andhakasura’s mace and many streams of blood started flowing. Many Bhairavas were born from these streams of blood. It is believed that Bhairav was born from the blood stream flowing in the east direction and was called Kaal Bhairav.
Insult of Lord Shiva by Brahma
Once a debate broke out between Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh regarding superiority. When all the gods were asked who was the best among the three, Brahma insulted Shiva. Lord Shiva became very angry due to this insult and from his anger Kaal Bhairav was born. Enraged, Baba Kaal Bhairav cut off one of Brahma’s five faces with his nail, leaving Brahma with four faces.
Due to cutting off the head of Lord Brahma, Kaal Bhairav was accused of the sin of killing Brahma. To get rid of this sin of killing a Brahma, Lord Shiva ordered him to visit all the pilgrimage sites. When Kaal Bhairav reached Kashi, Brahmaji’s head fell from his hand and he was freed from the sin of killing Brahma. After this, Lord Shiva appointed Bhairav as the Kotwal of Kashi and ordered him to reside there.
What is the Prasad of Kaal Bhairav?
Halwa, kheer, jalebi, sweet roti (made with jaggery water) and urad dal curd-vada etc. are offered to Kaal Bhairav. In some temples, liquor is also offered to Kaal Bhairav, which the devotees offer not as Prasad, but as a symbol of determination and strength.
