Tragedy strikes ATP Finals as two fans suffer fatal cardiac arrests

New Delhi: The ATP Finals in Turin were hit by tragedy on Monday after two spectators died following separate cardiac arrests during the tournament. The Italian Tennis Federation (FITP) and the ATP confirmed the heartbreaking news late in the evening, expressing condolences to the families of the victims.

The incident involved two individuals aged 70 and 78 who collapsed at different times inside the Inalpi Arena. The medical teams on-site rushed immediately in both cases, providing emergency aid and transferring the spectators to hospital. Despite their best efforts both were later pronounced dead.

The day’s first singles match between Lorenzo Musetti and American Taylor Fritz was briefly halted after an announcement in the arena confirmed a medical emergency in the stands. Later, the play was resumed after medical staff attended to the situation.

The arena was completely packed with fans cheering for Musetti and defending champion Jannik Sinner. What began as an electric tennis atmosphere turned somber as word spread about the two medical incidents.

Official statement and response

In a joint message, the FITP and ATP said, “The FITP and the ATP express their deepest condolences following the tragic passing of two spectators yesterday during the ATP Finals in Turin. On-site medical and emergency personnel responded immediately, providing all possible assistance. Despite prompt intervention and subsequent transfer to hospital, unfortunately, both sadly passed away.”

The statement reflected the shock that gripped the tournament community with officials and fans alike left shaken by the events. Organisers praised the swift response of medical teams and ensured their commitment of everyone’s safety who are attending the Finals.

The ATP Finals will continue through November 16 but Monday’s events cast a shadow over the tournament reminding everyone present that moments of sporting celebration can be overtaken by real-life tragedy. The tournament has been held at the Turin arena since 2021, with the Italian city confirmed as host for 2026 and will remain in the city until 2030.
