Stray dogs killed 10 deer at Puthur Zoological Park in Thrissur, Kerala. Serious questions have been raised on the safety of this recently opened designer zoo. The mystery has deepened due to non-release of CCTV footage.
Thrissur. Shocking news has come from the country’s first “Designer Zoo” built in Thrissur district of Kerala. 10 deer died after being attacked by stray dogs in the recently opened Puthur Zoological Park. This accident happened in the park which was dedicated to the public by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan a few weeks ago. Was this a natural accident or a major security lapse?
Not even a month was inaugurated, then how did such a big mistake happen?
Puthur Zoo was inaugurated on October 28 and is said to be the second largest zoo in Asia. Spread over 336 acres, this park houses about 534 animals of more than 80 species. It has been designed as a “Nature Based Open Enclosure” so that the animals get a natural environment. But now this open design has become the biggest security threat.
How did the dogs get inside the park? Why was the CCTV footage not shown?
According to sources, a pack of stray dogs entered the deer enclosure during the night. He killed 10 deer one by one. The biggest question is that despite such a tight security cordon, how did the dogs reach inside? Despite repeated requests, authorities have refused to release the CCTV footage, further raising suspicions that something is being hidden.
Team of wildlife experts reached the spot
A special team led by wildlife expert Dr Arun Zakaria reached Puthur Park on Tuesday for investigation. The team inspected the spot and started post-mortem of the deer carcasses. According to officials, the exact cause of death will be known only after the post mortem report comes.
A stain on the image of “Designer Zoo”
Puthur Zoological Park is called “India’s first designer zoo”. Modern infrastructure and nature friendly enclosures have been built here. But this painful incident has left a deep stain on the image of the zoo. Even before it opened for the public, such an incident has exposed the negligence of the administration.
At present the park is open only for school and college groups.
As of now Puthur Zoological Park is open only for school and college groups. The opening date for the general public has not been decided yet. But now after this accident, there is a possibility that the public opening may be postponed and the security system will be reviewed again.
