Kieron Pollard created history in T20 cricket as he smashed a magnificent 56-ball century in the Major League Cricket (MLC). Playing for MI New York against Washington Freedom, Pollard put on a show during a massive 246-run chase, tearing into Freedom bowlers, scoring 11 fours and four colossal sixes.
His knock wasn’t enough to get his team over the line, but it helped him become the undisputed king of T20 cricket. Earlier, Mitchell Owen’s 155 had helped Freedom set a daunting target for the MI New York.

The century meant that Pollard leapfrogged Chris Gayle to become the leading run scorer in T20 cricket. Gayle held the record for years, with 14562 runs to his name in 463 matches. Before the match, Pollard needed 81 runs to go past Gayle, and it took him just over 50 deliveries to break the record. Pollard now has 14582 runs in 735 innings. His number of innings is significantly higher than that of Gayle, but he has also taken 333 wickets in the format, making him one of the greats of the game.

After breaking Chris Gayle’s record, Pollard thanked his family and friends for their support. He said that Gayle is someone he looks up to and breaking his record is remarkable.
“Feel good. My friends, my family who have supported, everybody, so thank you very much. Chris Gayle is someone we look up to. Batting at No. 7 or 6, it’s very, very difficult. My role over the period of time was to finish matches,” he said after the match.
