In 2024, director Chidambaram S Poduval delivered one of Indian cinema’s most impactful survival thrillers, Manjummel Boys. Made on a modest budget, the film explored themes of pain, resilience, and triumph, going on to become one of the highest-grossing films in Malayalam cinema history. Chidambaram’s latest release, Balan The Boy, hit theatres today (June 19) and has already found an admirer in one of South Indian cinema’s leading stars, Naga Chaitanya. So impressed was the actor by the film that he decided to present it under the prestigious Annapurna Studios banner, where he serves as one of the directors. In an exclusive conversation with Zoom, Naga Chaitanya opened up about what made him to back the film.

When asked about the decision to distribute Balan: The Boy in Telugu, Naga Chaitanya said that following the success of Malayalam film Eko and, more recently, Veerabhadrudu, Annapurna Studios was keen to bring another compelling story to audiences. He added that the positive response the film received after being showcased at the Cannes Film Festival gave the film another boost.

Ask him whether Telugu-speaking audiences have developed a liking for Malayalam cinema in recent times, Naga Chaitanya said, “ Yes, increasingly so. In recent years, Malayalam films such as Manjummel Boys, Premalu, 2018, Aavesham, Bramayugam, and Lokah Chapter 1 have found a strong following among Telugu audiences. With their engaging stories, and fresh filmmaking approach, Malayalam cinema has built a dedicated fan base in the Telugu market. “
