Varanasi’s OTT Troubles Put Raaka Team on Alert

Rajamouli is widely regarded as the biggest director in Indian cinema.

His films generate tremendous hype from the day they are announced, and every project of his is expected to command record-breaking business across theatrical, satellite and digital platforms.

However, GreatAndhra’s recent report has sent shockwaves through the film industry.

The publication reported that Rajamouli has been finding it difficult to close an OTT deal for his ongoing film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, at the valuation sought by the makers.

The report quickly became a major talking point in industry circles.

Producers and trade analysts reportedly began making inquiries, only to learn that streaming platforms have indeed become far more cautious about acquiring films at sky-high prices.

The development has alarmed several producers because if a filmmaker of Rajamouli’s stature is unable to secure the OTT price he wants, it signals a larger shift in the digital market.

The days when streaming platforms aggressively competed for every big-ticket film appear to be changing.

One project that could feel the impact of this trend is Raaka, the mega-budget film starring Allu Arjun and directed by Atlee.

Produced by Sun Pictures, the film is being mounted on a grand scale with international technicians and extensive visual effects work.

Industry sources say the makers are hoping for a massive OTT deal, potentially in the range of Rs 300 crore to Rs 400 crore, especially considering that Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 reportedly fetched around Rs 260 crore from digital rights.

However, market conditions today are very different from those that existed during the Pushpa 2 deal. Streaming platforms are now focusing more on return on investment and viewership performance than on star power alone.

As a result, many in the trade believe that matching or surpassing the OTT numbers of Pushpa 2 will be a difficult task for any film, including Raaka.

For now, the industry is closely watching the outcome of Varanasi’s OTT negotiations, as it could redefine expectations for future big-budget productions.
