Suryakumar Yadav’s exit from India’s T20I setup, just months after leading the country to T20 World Cup 2026 glory with a 40-12 win record as captain, has prompted significant debate about where his career goes from here. Former India batter Robin Uthappa has offered a striking theory, suggesting a KKR homecoming could be on the horizon.
SKY played for Kolkata Knight Riders from 2014 to 2017 under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy, contributing to KKR’s second IPL title in 2014 with an average of almost 33 at a strike rate of 140.12.
He has been with the Mumbai Indians since 2018, but his IPL 2026 season was dismal with just 270 runs in 14 outings at an average below 21.
What did Robin Uthappa say about Suryakumar Yadav?
Speaking on the CommBoxTV YouTube channel, Uthappa linked SKY’s IPL future to Gambhir’s eventual departure from his role as India head coach.
He said: “From Surya’s point of view, for all intensive purposes, he might go to KKR. It rekindles the idea that once Gautam Gambhir finishes his stint with the Indian team, he probably goes back into KKR as a mentor or coach.”
In the former KKR wicket-keeper batsman’s eyes, SKY fits perfectly in the current KKR roster. He also believes that if Gambhir ever wished to return to the IPL side, a partnership between the former head coach and captain would be fabulous to see.
Uthappa added, “Surya fits into that as captain with Gambhir as the mentor again.”
Can SKY stage a comeback to the Indian cricket team?
Despite backing SKY’s longevity as a player, Uthappa was candid about the difficulty of forcing his way back into the national side, pointing to the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia as a particularly complicated obstacle for a player who will no longer get India A exposure at his age.
“Surya will play until he is 40. Unless he is marred by terrible form and the Midas touch is just over. But returning to the Indian side is going to be hard for Surya,” Uthappa said. “He won’t get an A in cricket at his age. So he won’t get to play on the Australian wickets where the 2028 T20 World Cup will be played.”
Shreyas Iyer has now been named India’s new T20I captain, with his first assignment being the two-match series in Ireland beginning June 26. SKY’s international future remains uncertain as the selectors look to build a new leadership structure around the 2027 ODI and 2028 T20 World Cup cycles.
