The sub-4m SUV segment is one of the highest volume segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market. The Maruti Fronx (compact crossover) is currently dominates this space, followed by the Tata Punch (compact crossover), Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Several new models are set to enter this segment over the next two years, while some of the most popular subcompact SUVs will undergo full generational updates including the Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
Let’s take a closer look at the key details of these upcoming new-generation subcompact SUVs.

New Kia Sonet
The will switch to the new K1 architecture, which features a 20mm longer wheelbase than its current model’s platform. This hints that the next-gen model is expected to offer improved rear seat space than the current generation. The new Sonet is expected to receive comprehensive changes inside and out including a larger touchscreen and driver’s display. Kia might also introduce a Level 2 ADAS suite with the new-generation model.
The existing 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol, 1.0L turbo petrol and 1.5L diesel engines are expected to be carried forward. The all-new Kia Sonet will also receive a strong hybrid powertrain, but at a later stage.
New Tata Nexon
Codenamed project ‘Garud’, the is expected to receive significant upgrades in terms of design, technology and features. The biggest update will be made to its underpinning. The all-new Nexon is likely to be based on the heavily modified version of its existing X1 platform. The overall design and styling could be inspired by Tata’s new-age models. With the generational update, the new Tata Nexon is expected to get an ADAS suite.
Mechanically, the new Tata Nexon is expected to retain the existing 1.2L turbo petrol engine that’s good enough for 120bhp and 170Nm. There is possibility that Tata Motors could discontinue the diesel engine due to the upcoming BS7 emission norms.
New Mahindra XUV 3XO
The is expected to derive design inspiration from the Mahindra Vision X concept, which was showcased on August 15, 2025. The subcompact SUV might also switch to the brand’s new NU_IQ platform, which is designed support multiple powertrains including ICE (internal combustion engine), electric and hybrid. There is also a possibility that the all-new XUV 3XO could be introduced with a new strong hybrid powertrain at a later stage.
