According to the popular story, at some time there was a mighty demon named Tarakasura, he was also an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He was a boon that he would be killed only by the son of Lord Shiva. After getting this boon, he took control of heaven and started torturing the gods. When the time came, Shiva son Karthikeya killed him. When Karthikeya came to know that Tarakasura was a devotee of Mahadev, his mind became distressed. At the place where Tarakasura he killed Tarakasura, he established the Shivling, which is known as Pillameshwar Mahadev. It is believed that Mahadev himself resides in this Shivling and the sea god himself anoints him.
