Chhaava is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, who is played by Vicky Kaushal. In the movie, played the role of a 15-year-old Tarabai.
Tarabai was Sambhaji’s younger sister-in-law and later one of the most important rulers in Maratha history. To be precise, she was the daughter of the powerful Maratha commander Hambirrao Mohite and the wife of Rajaram I, who was Sambhaji Maharaj’s younger half-brother.

According to historical records, after Sambhaji Maharaj was captured and executed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1689, the Maratha Empire faced a severe crisis. Rajaram succeeded Sambhaji as Chhatrapati and continued the struggle against the Mughals. Tarabai stood by Rajaram during this turbulent period and gained experience in administration and warfare.
When Rajaram died in 1700, their son was still a child. Tarabai assumed leadership as regent and effectively ruled the Maratha state in her son’s name. She became one of the fiercest opponents of Aurangzeb, organising military campaigns, appointing commanders, and keeping the Maratha resistance alive when many believed the empire would collapse.
