Karan Johar reveals Reema Maya will helm Student of the Year 3: ‘She made it her own series’

Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar recently took the stage at the Cinevesture International Film Festival (CIFF) in Chandigarh, where he opened up about his upcoming projects.

Among the highlights was his discussion about the highly anticipated Student of the Year 3 web series.

According to a report by Times of India, Karan Johar disclosed that the digital version of Student of the Year 3 will be helmed by Reema Maya, who is known for her work on the acclaimed short film Nocturnal Burger. Karan emphasised the importance of giving space to emerging directors and allowing them to shape projects according to their unique vision.

“Reema Maya will be directing the digital version of Student of the Year. But it will be her way and definitely not mine because if I enter Reema Maya’s world, then I will make it more of an illusion, which is what her name means. I just wanted it to be her voice. She made it her own series,” said Karan Johar.

Reema Maya, an international award-winning writer-director and the co-founder of Catnip Productions, has garnered recognition for her creative storytelling. Her short film Counterfeit Kunkoo received critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival 2018.

In addition to short films, Reema Maya has also directed videos for prominent brands like Netflix, Red Bull, and boAt. Her inclusion in the Hindustan Times’ 30 under 30 list in 2018 further solidified her status as a promising filmmaker to watch.

Reports from Harpers Bazaar last year suggested that Shanaya Kapoor, daughter of Sanjay Kapoor, is set to headline the third instalment of the franchise. However, no confirmation has come so far from the series’ producer or director.

Shanaya Kapoor was initially slated to make her debut with Dharma Productions’ Bedhadak alongside Laksh Lalwani and Gurfateh Pirzada. However, the project seems to have been shelved. Shanaya was later supposed to make her debut with the Malayalam film Vrushabha, starring Mohanlal, which also seems to have faced a similar fate.

As of now, the filmmakers are yet to make an official announcement regarding the Student of the Year 3 web series. The previous films in the franchise, Student of the Year (2012) and Student of the Year 2 (2019), were well-received by audiences, and anticipation is high for the next instalment.
