Popular actor Govardhan Asrani died on 20 October. He was 84 years old. According to media reports, Asrani was admitted to the hospital for four days due to water filling in his lungs and this became the reason for his death. Now his last rites were performed at the crematorium located in Shantinagar, Santa Cruz. Due to his sudden demise, there has been a wave of mourning in the entire industry. Just a few hours before his death, he had wished Diwali to his fans on social media.

Who was Asrani?

Govardhan Asrani was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He worked in more than 350 films in a career spanning more than five decades. Govardhan started his career in films in the year 1970. However, he got his real recognition from the film ‘Mere Apne’. Asrani made his place in the hearts of the audience by playing the role of an eccentric jailer in the 1975 classic film ‘Sholay’. Although his screen time in the film was less, his acting, especially his dialogue ‘We are jailers of the British era’ became memorable. He has worked in the most number of Hindi films as a character actor and comic actor within a decade, acting in 101 films in the 1970s and 107 films in the 1980s. Apart from films, he was equally loved on television, especially for the role of Narad in Doordarshan’s 1985 serial Natkhat Narad.

He acted in hit films like ‘Heraferi’, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ and ‘Gharwali Baharwali’. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Comic Actor for both ‘Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar’ and ‘Balika Badhu’.
