One day Devraj Indra approached Lord Krishna with a request to save him from Narakasura.

Devraj told God that Narakasura had abducted many kings of the earth and the daughters of common people and had put them in prison. He said that God, please protect all three worlds from that demon. Hearing the words of Devraj Indra, Lord Krishna along with his wife Satyabhama rode on Garuda and reached Pragjyotashpur. Nakarasura lived here.

Lord Krishna, with the help of his wife, killed his six sons along with the demon named Mur. When Narakasura got the news of this, he set out with his army to fight God. Narakasura was cursed that his death would be at the hands of a woman and hence Shri Krishna’s wife Satyabhama became his charioteer. With the help of Satyabhama, God destroyed Narakasura.

The day on which Lord Shri Krishna killed Narakasura, it was Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month, hence this date is known as Narak Chaturdashi.
