Following a massive setback to the Republicans and US President Donald Trump in the Midterm elections, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke remarked that people are now rediscovering the importance of democratic values and rejecting “strongman politics.” In a post on X, he said the post-2010 period witnessed a renewed fascination with strongman politics, with people being persuaded that democracy was slowing down progress and that a single powerful leader could address their problems.
He said voters placed their faith in leaders who positioned themselves above institutions and promised national greatness, prosperity and global dominance.
However, Dipke argued that the trend instead resulted in the erosion of democratic institutions, suppression of rights, wars and economic turmoil. He said recent political developments suggested that public faith in strongman politics was beginning to unravel, with people increasingly recognising that concentrating power in one individual did not necessarily make a nation stronger.
He added that people were rediscovering the importance of democratic freedoms, accountability and institutions, while questioning what national greatness truly meant. Dipke said economic stability, an affordable cost of living and accountability from those in power were increasingly taking precedence over promises of global dominance.
The Blue wave has swept across the United States, with Democrats taking control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the US midterm elections, according to projections by American news networks.
CNN reported that Democrats capitalised on President Donald Trump’s historically low popularity to secure a major victory, giving them significant power to challenge his administration during the final two years of his presidency.
