Actress Rupali Ganguly Takes Legal Action Against AI-Generated Fake Images

Renowned television actress Rupali Ganguly has filed a petition with the Bombay  , alleging that several online platforms are using her images and other content without permission. She claims that artificial intelligence (AI) has been employed to create fake images of her, and some videos have been manipulated as well.

Ganguly asserts that this unauthorized content is being displayed on websites featuring obscene and objectionable material. In her petition, she argues that such actions violate her personality rights, stating that an individual’s identity, image, and voice should not be used without consent. She has requested the court to intervene in this matter.

The Bombay High Court is scheduled to hear her petition on November 4, with Justice Madhav Jamdar presiding over the case.

Ganguly is not alone in her fight; several other actresses have also sought legal recourse against the misuse of their images and identities. Recently, actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu filed a similar petition in the Bombay High Court, alleging that various websites and online platforms were using her images and voice to create fake videos, morphed pictures, and explicit content using AI.

In response to Prabhu’s case, the court granted her interim relief, ordering Google, Meta, and other online platforms to remove the identified content that misused her identity. Earlier in July, actress Preity Zinta also approached the Bombay High Court regarding AI-generated deepfake videos and morphed images. The court directed relevant online platforms to eliminate the offensive content in her case as well.
