In many decades of cinema, several Bollywood actresses have walked away from movies and acting after getting married. From Mumtaz to Twinkle Khanna and Bhagyashree, many actresses quit Bollywood at the height of their prime when their careers were beginning to take off.
While some actresses attribute their decision to dedicate themselves to marriage, some call it to find different interests. Here’s a list of nine Bollywood actresses who left acting at their peak career.
Bollywood Actresses Who Left Acting After Getting Married
These nine Bollywood actresses disappeared from the big screen and chose to leave acting behind after getting married.
1. Mumtaz
Mumtaz quitting Bollywood remains one of the most dramatic exits of actresses from cinema. She worked in many popular movies including Ram Aur Shyam (1967), Do Raaste (1969), Khilona (1970) and Aap Ki Kasam (1974).
When Mumtaz married wealthy businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974, she was the most sought-after actress in Bollywood.
In interviews later, Mumtaz revealed that her family and in-laws did not want her to continue working after marriage. As a result, she had to quit acting and even return the signing amount to many producers. She recalled that she was earning Rs 7.5 lakh per film when she left.
2. Babita Kapoor
Before becoming popular as Karishma and Kareena’s mother, Babita was a popular actress of her era. She worked in many movies such as Dus Lakh (1966), Farz (1967), Haseena Maan Jayegi (1968) and Kal Aaj Aur Kal (1971).
She married Ranbir Kapoor on November 6 1971, who was one of the most notable names in Bollywood cinema. But she explained that the Kapoor family had traditional expectations under which women in the family were not encouraged to work in movies after marriage.
As a result, Babita quit films in the early 1970s, with Sone Ke Haath (1974) among her final releases.
But she never let go of acting and played a significant role in managing and supporting the careers of her daughters, Karisma and Kareena.
3. Nargis
When Nargis quit acting, she was known for her extraordinary performances in Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955) and Mother India (1957).
She was one of the most popular actresses when she married her Mother India co-star Sunil Dutt in 1958. However, Nargis believed that having an acting career alongside family responsibilities would be difficult.
In an interview with All India Radio, she explained that she was not able to manage both personal and professional life together.
Nargis did make a return for Raat Aur Din (1967), a film that earned her the inaugural National Film Award for Best Actress. However, it remained a rare exception rather than the beginning of another acting phase.
4. Meenakshi Seshadri
Meenakshi Seshadri ruled Bollywood with blockbusters such as Hero (1983), Meri Jung (1985), Shahenshah (1988) and Damini (1993).
After being the most recognisable Bollywood actresses of her time, Meenakshi Seshadri got married to Harish Mysore in 1995. Eventually, the couple moved to Dallas in the United States to start their family.
Meenakshi’s last Bollywood movie was Ghatak: Lethal (1996) with Sunny Deol. The actress subsequently stepped away from the Hindi film industry and focused on her family and classical dance.
6. Twinkle Khanna
Twinkle Khanna did not quit Bollywood but shifted her career from acting on the big screen to producer, writer and entrepreneur.
Twinkle Khanna was born to Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, one of the most iconic Bollywood couples. She made her debut with Barsaat (1995) and eventually got to work in movies such as Baadshah (1999), Mela (2000) and Jodi No. 1 (2001).
She got married to Akshay Kumar on January 17, 2001 and left acting that year. However, she exclaimed that she did not leave her acting career because of her marriage.
In an interview with The Indian Express, she said she had no particular attachment to being a heroine and had wanted to leave acting before her wedding.
7. Bhagyashree
Bhagyashree rose to fame with Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), starring opposite Salman Khan. Despite becoming a star overnight, she married Himalaya Dasani in 1990.
After marriage, Bhagyashree worked in Bollywood only with her husband. She did not follow a conventional acting career and established an independent name for herself. She turned down opportunities that could have established her as one of the leading actresses of the 1990s.
Bhagyashree later returned to acting after 2020. She appeared in Thalaivii (2021) and Radhe Shyam (2022).
8. Asin
Asin worked as a prominent actress who worked across Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Her Bollywood breakthrough came through Aamir Khan’s Ghajini in 2008. She then appeared in Ready (2011), Housefull 2 (2012), Bol Bachchan (2012) and Khiladi 786 (2012).
Asin’s last movie was All Is Well (2015), co-starring Abhishek Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor.
In January 2016, Asin married Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma. After that, she did not accept new professional assignments and completed her existing commitments before the wedding.
Asin made a clear decision to step away from the entertainment industry. She has since maintained a largely private life.
9. Ayesha Takia
Ayesha Takia’s Bollywood journey is defined by movies such as Socha Na Tha (2005), Dor (2006), Salaam-E-Ishq (2007) and Wanted (2009). She married restaurateur Farhan Azmi on March 1, 2009.
In a 2011 interview with Rediff, Ayesha revealed that she stopped working after getting married. She wanted to travel, explore new interests and give time to her marriage. She also got involved in her husband’s restaurant business and explored entrepreneurship.
Her last released film was Nagesh Kukunoor’s Mod (2011).
