CSK likely to release Rs 14.2 crore all-rounder ahead of IPL 2027 mini auction

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might reportedly release young all-rounder Prashant Veer ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 auction.

bought Veer for a high sum of Rs 14.20 crore in last year’s auction and might part ways to free up funds ahead of the auction.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, CSK may release one of their two Rs 14.2 crore acquisitions ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. The five-time champions bought both Veer and young wicket-keeper batter Kartik Sharma for the price of Rs 14.2 crore each. Veer appears more likely to face the axe.

As per the report, there is a perception inside CSK that Veer hasn’t quite managed to justify his value even though he is regarded as a great prospect. The 20-year-old left-arm spin all-rounder scored only 90 runs and went wicketless in six matches for CSK last season.

Kartik, on the other hand, played considerably in the middle order and finished with 295 runs in 11 matches at an average of 32. However, his six-hitting ability that earned him the contract in the first place, didn’t quite come to the fore throughout the season as the youngster often struggled to up the ante.

CSK might decide to retain Kartik as he can be a long-term option in the middle order. However, a CSK official told Cricbuzz that no decisions have been taken yet on retentions and releases. But CSK might release Veer to free up funds for the auction.

There is also a chance that the franchise might try to get the all-rounder back at a lower price at the auction. CSK currently have Rs 2.4 crore in its purse and will enter the auction with Rs 7.4 crore after the annual increment of Rs 5 crore to the salary cap.

CSK looking to create additional funds

CSK are looking to create additional funds ahead of the IPL 2027 auction to give Zaheer Khan and the new coaching staff a chance to rebuild the squad. Though the options will be fewer in the mini auction, CSK will be hoping to fill a lot of gaps after their disappointing performance last season.

CSK have also been linked heavily with a trade move for star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, and it remains to be seen if they will manage to land the Mumbai Indians skipper. November 15 is the deadline for all ten teams to announce their final list of retained and released players ahead of the mini auction in Goa in December.
